Siggraph 2006: Boston Returns
|

|
Siggraph is coming! What is Siggraph the Association for Computing Machinery's (or ACM) Special Interest Group (SIG) for Computer Graphics (GRAPH). Also, know as ACM/Siggraph. Once a year, the community of computer graphic artists gets together to discuss the state-of-the-art in computer graphics, where we are going, and also there is this Convention of hardware and software that kind of rides along on its coattails.
Originally begun in the mid 1970s, Siggraph grew into a popular conference with close to 50,000 attendees at its peak in the mid-1990s, but... The conference realized that all this funding was not never-ending, and there was a limit to what Siggraph could buy. Cut backs over the last decade has seen the conferenc trying to discover its own future.
Well, hard to say, isn't it? Growing from a bunch of nerd-scientists showing each other video tapes, and comparing notes on the Arpanet, has grown to all the things we associate today with modern entertainment -- email, the Internet, HTML, PHP, Computer Graphics, Digital Projection, Roboic Vision, Visual effects, Computer Animaiton Entertainment -- companies like Pixar all came from the papers published at Siggraph every year.
What will be the next "New-new?"
Go to Siggraph (this year in Boston), and find out. I have my reservation and my pass bought already. A little late for me this year, but bought none-the-less. I have yet to get my plane ticket, but it's always a red-eye anyway, and usually easy to find West Coast to East Coast time zone thing.
I had a great time in 1989 (the last time this was in Boston), I'm sure this year, I'll have another.
Good stuff to see. Come on down. _________________ "I don't live in a virtual world, I just work there."

SIGGRAPH 2006 Keynote Announced
Joe Rohde, Executive Designer and Vice President, Creative for Walt Disney Imagineering, will present the SIGGRAPH 2006 keynote address "From Myth to Mountain: Insights Into Virtual Placemaking" on 31 July during the 33rd International SIGGRAPH Conference.
Rohde is the lead designer of Disney's Animal Kingdom and is responsible for driving the vision for the theme park. He was the principal creative force behind the just-opened Expedition Everest attraction - which made its debut this year.
"It is an honor to have such a dynamic and creative leader as our keynote speaker in Boston," stated John C. Finnegan, SIGGRAPH 2006 Conference Chair from Purdue University. "It is also fitting to add such a distinguished and cutting-edge professional to our long legacy of dynamic and fascinating SIGGRAPH keynote speakers."

Wireheads is going to Boston for Siggraph -- the largest yearly event in geekdom known to Mankind. I'll be there and spreading the good works and word of Wire-heads.com to the 35,000 geek brethren of mine.
Going eqipped. I have 1,000 postcards printed to advertise and handout to all I meet, plus a small number 48 free Wireheads t-shirts to give away to the best billboards. Biz cards will, of course, be flowing, but most of all -- a place to meet, a place to laugh at us, with us for all wireheads everywhere.
So, if you manage to see me there on the first day (I arrive Saturday morning, and I'm staying at the Conference Hotel, the Marriott at Copley Place), and you plan to wear the Wireheads t-shirt on one day of the conference, then you will increase your chances of gettin' a free one from Jimbo.
Cheers! Let's all raise a beer to Boston! _________________ "I don't live in a virtual world, I just work there."

Okay, back from Siggraph. Boston was HOT. Yeah, one day it got up to 105! In Boston of all places, and humid, oh yeah. Only New Orleans has been more so. I have many pictures, and lots to chat about. That will all be going on the RadVfx LiveJournal as soon as possible.
It was fun. It was informative. Met lots of wireheads from the local areas around Beantown, as well as some really nice ones from the far corners of the Earth.
I have a pitch coming up soon. When that is over, I will post, post, post!
Cheers!

Okay, the HUGE Live journal post on the Wirehead's trip to Beantown and Siggraph is posted here. Lots of pictures and a rebellious attitude inspired by the center of the American Revolution. Let's have a Tea party, folks. _________________ "I don't live in a virtual world, I just work there."

Go to it here. LOTS of pics. Lots of rambling words from me (Okay, it was late. I was tired. I sound like a freakin' tourist showing off his slide show, but at least it's done). Yeah, I know. No excuse. There's a couple of cool things to follow up with, though.
Hey, nice endorsement, pal. Do this for a living?
